IBM also announces support of the IBM Personal Computer DOS 4.0, and IBM Operating System/2 Standard Edition 1.0 and 1.1 and IBM Operating System/2 Extended Edition 1.0 and 1.1. The IBM PC Network Adapter II supports the NETBIOS interface and the 802.2/Logical Link Control (LLC) protocols via the IBM Local Area Network Support Program (83X7873). This allows the adapter to provide access to IBM PC Network and IBM Token-Ring Network applications written to the NETBIOS or APPC/PC interfaces. It is also compatible with the protocols of original PC Network Adapter via the IBM PC Network Protocol Driver program (6280061). This allows the adapter to take advantage of the same protocol and interface as the original IBM PC Network. DESCRIPTION OF PC NETWORK ADAPTER (#6972) The IBM PC Network Adapter II is a feature card which includes a modular broadband modem for connecting IBM Industrial Computers to the IBM PC Network. The card features a 2 megabit-per-second transmission speed with a CSMA/CD access protocol and supports the previously available PC Network protocol (contained on PC Network Adapter) via IBM PC Network Protocol Driver (6280061), supports connection to IBM Token-Ring Networks or other IBM PC Network based networks via the IBM Token-Ring Network/PC Network Interconnect Program (6467036), and supports 802.2/LLC protocols via IBM Local Area Network Support Program (83X7873). To take advantage of the 802.2 protocol, the IBM Local Area Network Support Program must be installed on all workstations on the network. The selected protocol and NETBIOS interface support are loaded into PC RAM to execute on the PC system processor. The IBM PC Network Adapter II ROM includes Power On Self Test (POST) diagnostics, which help the customer to identify adapter failure without diagnostic diskettes or printed problem determination procedures. The adapter also supports the Remote Initial Program Load (RIPL) feature. A 3 meter coaxial cable is supplied. This adapter is also compatible with the IBM PC Network Adapter via the IBM PC Network Protocol Driver program (6280061). Installation instructions are shipped with the feature. IBM PC NETWORK BASEBAND ADAPTER (#6973) The IBM PC Network Baseband Adapter (#6973) is a feature card for connecting the IBM Industrial Computers (7531, 7532) to the baseband IBM PC Network. The adapter supports the NETBOIS interface and the 802.2/Logical Link Control (LLC) protocols via the IBM Local Area Network Support Program (83X7873). This allows the adapter to provide access to broadband IBM PC Network and IBM Token-Ring Network applications written to the NETBIOS or APPC/PC interfaces. HIGHLIGHTS OF PC NETWORK BASEBAND ADAPTER (#6973) o A feature card for the IBM Industrial Computers (7531, 7532). o Modular baseband transceiver for connection to the baseband IBM PC Network. o Supports 802.2/LLC protocols. o Supports Remote Initial Program Load (RIPL). o Uses IBM 5173 PC Network Baseband Extender for additional distance and for connecting greater than eight workstations. DESCRIPTION OF PC NETWORK BASEBAND ADAPTER (#6973) This card features a 2 megabit-per-second transmission speed with a CSMA/CD access protocol and supports 802.2/LLC protocols via IBM Local Area Network Support Program (83X7873). Up to eight workstations can be linked together in a chain topology with an overall length of up to 200 feet of 4-wire twisted pair IBM Cabling System Type 3 specifications telephone wire. A chain of workstations linked to the 5173 can have an overall length of up to 400 feet. Up to ten daisy chains with eight workstations each can connect to the Baseband Extender for a maximum of 80 workstations in the baseband IBM PC Network. IBM PC NETWORK ADAPTER II-FREQUENCY 2 (#6091)(96X6051) AND FREQUENCY 3 (#6092)(96X6056) The IBM PC Network Adapter II-Frequency 2 (#6091) and the IBM PC Network Adapter II-Frequency 3 (#6092) are two new IBM PC Network adapters that provide additional RF channels for connecting the IBM Industrial Computers (7531, 7532) to the broadband IBM PC Network. The broadband channels used by the Frequency 2 adapter are 2' and O. The Frequency 3 adapter uses channels 3' and P. The use of these channels provides industry standard offsets, coexistence with MAP, mid-split and high-split format compatibility, as well as increased network capacity, security, flexibility, and performance. These adapters are designed for the large broadband IBM PC Networks of the industrial, educational, research, financial, and governmental environments. DESCRIPTION OF PC NETWORK FREQUENCY ADAPTERS (#6091) AND (#6092) The new broadband modems that are used on this base card are designed to transmit and receive on different RF channels than those used by the original IBM PC Network Adapter and PC Network Adapter II. The IBM PC Network Adapter II-Frequency 2 and IBM PC Network Adapter II-Frequency 3 provide two additional channel pairs that greatly in-crease the capacity and flexibility of PC Network. With these additional channels, the maximum number of workstations supported by PC Network increases from 1000+ to 3000+. These new adapters also feature the industry-standard 192.25 MHz channel offset for compatibility with both mid-split and high-split formats and coexistence with networks that use MAP. The present PC Network channel offset is 168.25 MHz. The selected protocol and NETBIOS interface support are loaded into PC RAM to execute on the PC system processor. The ROM of both adapters includes Power On Self Test (POST) diagnostics, which help the customer to identify adapter failure without diagnostic diskettes or printed problem determination procedures. The adapters also support the Remote Initial Program Load (RIPL) feature. A 3 meter, 75 ohm, coaxial cable is supplied. The IBM LAN Support Program allows these adapters to run with applications written for either the NETBIOS, IEEE 802.2, or APPC/PC interfaces.
